چکیده

Latent heat release associated with tropical deep convective activity is investigated as a source for migrating (sun-synchronous) diurnal and semidiurnal tidal oscillations in the 80±150-km height region. Satellite-based cloud brightness temperature measurements made between 1988 and 1994 and averaged into 3-h bins are used to determine the annualand longitude-average local-time distribution of rainfall rate, and hence latent heating, between ‹40° latitude. Regional average rainfall rates are shown to be in good agreement with climatological values derived from surface rain gauge data. A global linearized wave model is used to estimate the corresponding atmospheric perturbations in the mesosphere/lower thermosphere (80±150 km) resulting from upward-propagating tidal components excited by the latent heating. The annual-average migrating diurnal and semidiurnal components achieve velocity and temperature amplitudes of order 10±20 m s and 5± 10 K, respectively, which represent substantial contributions to the dynamics of the region. The latent heat forcing also shifts the phase (local solar time of maximum) of the semidiurnal surface pressure oscillation from 0912 to 0936 h, much closer to the observed value of 0944 h.

Tidal wind oscillations in the tropical lower atmosphere as observed by Indian MST Radar

Diurnal tidal components in horizontal winds measured by MST radar in the troposphere and lower stratosphere over a tropical station Gadanki (13.5 N, 79.2 E) are presented for the autumn equinox, winter, vernal equinox and summer seasons. For this purpose radar data obtained over many diurnal cycles from September 1995 to August 1996 are used. The results obtained show that although the seasona...

Sources of global warming in upper ocean temperature during El Nio

Global average sea surface temperature (SST) from 40øS to 60øN fluctuates ñ0.3øC on interannual period scales, with global warming (cooling) during E1 Nifio (La Nifia). About 90% of the global warming during E1 Nifio occurs in the tropical global ocean from 20øS to 20øN, half because of large SST anomalies in the tropical Pacific associated with E1 Nifio and the other half because of warm SST a...

The Effective Static Stability Experienced by Eddies in a Moist Atmosphere

Water vapor directly affects the dynamics of atmospheric eddy circulations through the release of latent heat. But it is difficult to include latent heat release in dynamical theories because of the associated nonlinearity (precipitation generally occurs where there is upward motion). A new effective static stability is derived that fundamentally captures the effect of latent heat release on mo...

Discrepancies in tropical upper tropospheric warming between atmospheric circulation models and satellites

Recent studies have examined tropical upper tropospheric warming by comparing coupled atmosphere–ocean global circulation model (GCM) simulations from Phase 3 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP3) with satellite and radiosonde observations of warming in the tropical upper troposphere relative to the lower-middle troposphere. These studies showed that models tended to overestimate...

The Effect of Latent Heat Release on the Evolution of a Warm Occluded Thermal Structure

The effect of latent heat release on the development of the occluded thermal structure in a major winter storm is examined through comparison of full physics (FP) and no-latent-heat-release (NLHR) simulations of the event performed using the fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University–NCAR Mesoscale Model (MM5). Though both simulations possess a well-developed occluded thermal ridge near the...
